Why Eat Salt?

Why ‘Eat Salt’? Why it’s important to stay salty…

DISCLAIMER: This article should be read with a pinch of salt. Seriously, if you eat too much salt, it can raise your blood pressure, increasing the risk of heart disease. So don’t eat salt in vast quantities because we ‘said’ so!

What does it mean to ‘eat salt’?

Does ‘eating salt’ mean ‘going surfing’? Kinda.

Does ‘eating salt’ mean ‘wiping out’? Maybe.

Are we encouraging people to eat more salt? Not really, but sodium is an important electrolyte along with potassium, bicarbonate, chloride, magnesium, calcium and phosphate. So if you want to stay hydrated on long surfing sessions, you may want some extra salt.

Why are we answering a question with more questions? Good question. Okay, let’s get into it…

The meaning of ‘Eatsalt’

We admit, there are quite a few surf brands and sea-themed stores with ‘salt’ in the title. But that sorta makes sense, doesn’t it? Salt represents the sea and it represents surfers. The sea is salty, surf hair is salty, sweat is salty—if you don’t like salt, you chose the wrong sport.

But more importantly, salt makes everything taste better (in moderation, and perhaps not the sea itself when you get a face full). Salt is an essential ingredient for life. We have to eat salt to exist. People are ‘the salt of the earth’ if they are goodness incarnate. Salt keeps us afloat.

In the UK, if we ‘eat salt’ with someone, we are invited to share one’s food, live in their house or crash on their sofa for the night. It means an open door, a warm welcome and generosity. We like these things. And we want our brand to represent kindness to the earth as well as surfing stoke.

So keep eating salt!

A note on Eatsalt and sustainability

The planet is suffering. Climate change is having a drastic impact on our seas, natural habitats and livelihoods across the world. And we don’t want to rub salt in that wound. We want to be a responsible surfing brand that’s worth its salt, using organic, sustainable and recycled materials wherever possible. Over the course of 2021, we are reviewing every one of our products and processes to make sure we are a more circular business.
